If the mortar is too dry, the blocks will not stick together properly. If it is too wet, flowing mortar can spill out of the joints, resulting in wasted time and materials for clean-up.

Construction grade Hydroxyporpyl Methyl Cellulose(HPMC) is widely used in dry mix mortar industry. Could be soluble in water and form the transparent solution. As the important additives in mortar, Hydroxyproypl methyl Cellulose could increase the water retention, increase the workability and increase open time etc.

If you are doing a smaller job or want to save money, make your mortar from scratch. Start by dry mixing the cement and sand. Use separate mixing containers for the dry components. The standard mortar mix ratio is one part Portland cement to three parts sand. This depends on the type of mortar you need for your job. Add the sand to the concrete and use a mortar trowel or hoe to fold them together. Make sure the concrete and sand are completely mixed.

Some types of mortar includes slaked lime in the dry mix. This makes the mortar easier to work with construction and more water resistant once it has set. If you wish to add lime with a mix made from scratch, use it in place of approximately 10% of the cement. Avoid inhaling particles in the mixture and keep them away from the eyes or skin. Wear goggles, work gloves, long sleeves and a gas mask. If possible, mix the mortar outside and make sure the wind blows away from you.

PRO TIP: Before adding sand, sift it through a 1/4″ wire mesh screen to filter out any stones that are too large or coarse for the mortar.

Mixing mortar or concrete

Mixing mortar in a bucket or wheelbarrow is relatively easy, but hiring a mortar mixer may be more convenient for larger jobs. Determine the amount of water you need. The amount may vary depending on the type of work, the moisture content in the sand and even the weather. Use a mixture of one part water to three or four parts as a starting point. If the mixture is too dry, add additional water as needed.

 

When mixing mortar in a bucket, add about 3/4 of the water first. Adding water first reduces the chance of the dry concrete or mortar mixture sticking to the bottom of the bucket. Adding the water first also reduces the amount of dust in the air.

 

Gradually stir the mixture and the remaining water. Use a trowel or paddle to turn the mortar mixture manually. This may take 5 to 10 minutes. For faster and easier mixing of the mortar, use a paddle mixer or an electric drill with a paddle attachment. Run the drill at a low speed per minute until the mixture is completely mixed.

 

Stir the mixture until there are no visible puddles or dry parts. Even if the mortar appears to be well mixed, continue mixing for at least two minutes to ensure that it is well blended. If the mortar seems too dry, add water in small quantities as required. It is better to add too little water at once than too much.

 

Mortar mixers use a rotating paddle in a fixed drum. Cement mixers can also be used to mix mortar, but a rotating drum can be more effective for mixing the heavy aggregates of concrete. Mortar mixers are more effective with fine aggregates.
